Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

Join our dedicated team of educational interpreters providing essential munication access to deaf and hard of hearing students! We're seeking a skilled American Sign Language interpreter to support student success in Michigan's dynamic educational environments.

Position Overview

Facilitate seamless munication between deaf and hard of hearing students, teachers, and peers in various educational settings. Your expertise in ASL interpretation will ensure equal access to classroom instruction, discussions, and extracurricular activities while maintaining professional interpreting standards and ethics.

Work across diverse educational environments including general education classrooms, specialized programs, assemblies, field trips, and after-school activities. Support students from elementary through high school levels, adapting your interpreting style to meet developmental needs and academic content plexity.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation between American Sign Language and spoken English during classroom instruction and educational activities. Maintain professional boundaries while advocating for munication access and student needs. Collaborate with teachers and support staff to ensure optimal positioning and lighting for visual munication.

Prepare for assignments by reviewing lesson plans, vocabulary, and subject-specific terminology. Participate in IEP meetings and educational planning sessions when appropriate. Document interpreting services and municate with educational teams regarding student munication needs and preferences.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum 3.5 EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score required. Two years of professional interpreting experience in educational settings. Fluency in American Sign Language with strong receptive and expressive skills. Understanding of deaf culture and munity values.

Excellent physical stamina and visual acuity for sustained interpreting work. Professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality. Flexibility to work with various age groups and academic subjects. Reliable transportation for travel between school sites when needed.

Preferred Qualifications

EIPA score of 4.0 or higher demonstrates advanced interpreting petency. Written EIPA pletion showing prehensive ASL knowledge. RID or NIC certification with written examination ponent. Experience interpreting specialized academic content including STEM subjects, literature, and social studies.

Background working with students who have additional disabilities or learning differences. Familiarity with educational terminology and classroom management procedures. Training in mental health interpreting or trauma-informed practices preferred.
