SUMMARY OF POSITION

The primary function of the Locomotive Engineer is to maintain responsibility over the physical operation and safety of the locomotive. All train crew employees are responsible for strict adherence to safety guidelines and for completing their duties with integrity and professionalism.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
2. Review instructions from dispatchers and yardmasters, and discuss with locomotive engineer and train crew.
3. Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures.
4. Accurately receive and transmit information by radio and telephone.
5. Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists.
6. Assist and instruct train crews in coupling/uncoupling cars, operating switches, and minor repairs to railcars.
7. Work professionally with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars.
8. Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure safety.
9. Understand color and/or hand signals and systems.
10. Make precise adjustments in moving controls to exact positions.
11. Respond quickly to visual signals and displays.
12. Operate locomotive controls safely and efficiently, including throttle, brakes, valves, and switches.
13. Ascend/descend steps and ladders safely.
14. Follow directions from conductors and brakemen.
15. Line switches safely.
16. Perform locomotive maintenance tasks as needed.
17. Comply with all railroad instructions and federal regulations.
18. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Conductor-specific responsibilities include ensuring compliance with safety rules, reviewing instructions, communicating effectively, assisting with coupling/uncoupling, working with customers, maintaining situational awareness, understanding signals, making precise adjustments, and working safely.

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

• High School diploma/GED or 2 years relevant experience.
• At least 18 years old.
• Valid Driver's License.
• 2 years of work and/or college experience; railroad experience preferred.
• Pass all assessments and background checks.
• Compliance with drug/alcohol testing and regulations.
• Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, hydraulic equipment.
• Ability to read safety manuals, instructions, schematics.
• Meet physical requirements and work schedule flexibility.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must meet visual and hearing requirements, perform physical activities including climbing, lifting, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and wearing PPE. The position is safety-sensitive and requires adherence to safety protocols.
