The Birth Doula is a community health worker who will work with pregnant and postpartum women and their families. The doula will promote healthy pregnancies, breastfeeding, and parent-infant attachment. While establishing a trusting relationship with their birthing clients, they will provide prenatal, labor, and postpartum support. They will focus especially on birthing support by providing emotional and educational support during each home visit. The Birth Doula is an integral member of the overall pregnancy. They will provide culturally sensitive support and serve as a role model for our birthing clients. The Doula is the link for birthing clients to the healthcare system and assist with resource needs in the community. Essential Job Functions include initiating contact early in pregnancy, establishing trusted relationships, visiting clients in homes or comfortable settings, attending prenatal appointments, preparing clients for labor and delivery, supporting mother and family through labor and delivery, assisting with breastfeeding and bonding post-delivery, collecting required documentation, visiting client-baby pair within 24 hours of discharge, maintaining postpartum contact for up to 12 months, advocating and monitoring medical needs, developing community partnerships, maintaining confidentiality, recognizing role limitations and making referrals, cooperating with staff, participating in meetings, intervening as a mandated reporter in unsafe environments, and carrying out delegated tasks. Licensing requires Doula Certification in State of Practice within 30 days of hire. Education requires High School Diploma/GED. Preferred experience includes NA, STNA, MA or equivalent and 2 years recent birth doula experience. Training preferred is DONA certified training. The role involves working with neonates to adults, may involve high stress, exposure to hazardous substances, travel to off-site locations, and on-call requirements. Physical demands include lifting, pushing, stooping, crawling, climbing, balance, bending, sitting, walking, standing, manual dexterity, and shift work. Skills required include self-motivation, good communication, teamwork, multitasking, and comfort in homes and off-site locations.
